SKILL SETS

Skill sets have been issued this week in order to raise the grades of students that didn't do well on the examination. These sets include the rules of operation, and an example of how to work a problem with accompanying problem sets. They are due before winter break and will be used to increase test scores.

!!!ATTENTION PARENTS!!!

Test results from the Math Examination given Monday, December 15 are in and ALL STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE THE EXAM SIGNED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN and returned the following day. This will allow us to see where our students are.

This week, we will be reviewing exam topics and sharpening skills that require further mastery. We must ALL work very hard to get our students back on track and pace to pass end of year examinations. Additionally, students will be given holiday review packets to keep their skills sharp. I urge all parents to work hard on drilling students within their areas of weakness
which can be detected from Monday's exam.

If you have further questions regarding what skill area your child may require further mastery in, please feel free e-mail me at:

rashad.thornton@imagineschools.com

I look forward to all of us working hard together in order to ensure that we make adequate progress towards building solid mathematical foundations for our kids.

Mr. Thornton's Math Class

Welcome to the Mr. Thornton's Mathematics Blog for the MYP at Imagine Wesley

!!!ATTENTION ALL PARENTS!!!

FREE AFTER SCHOOL TUTORIAL

Available Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
From 3:45-4:30pm

All students are encouraged to attend that experience difficulty in Math!

As preparation is a key to success, I urge all students to come to class prepared everyday. Therefore, each day students are expected to attend class with the following:

  • Pencils (sharpened)
  • Math notebook which contains the three sections outlined in the course syllabus:
  1. lecture notes section
  2. classwork section
  3. homework section
  • Clean notebook paper (preferably in the lecture notes section)
  • Assignments completed.
  • Questions derived from the previous lecture or assignment.
  • Good attitude
  • Focus
  • Discipline

Parents may check the notebook each day after school and see the homework, classwork, and notes that students have been assigned to work on and study.

This week, students in 5th and 6th Grade are working on multiplying and dividing fractions, while 7th Grade is working on exponents, radicals, and algebraic statements.

A second math exam will be administered before the Christmas Holiday which will cover what we have worked on since our short beginning. This exam will include problems that test students' ability to:

  • compare fractions
  • find equivalent fractions
  • convert fractions into percents and decimals
  • distinguish probability
  • add and subtract fractions; mixed numbers and improper fractions with different denominators
  • find the LCM (least common multiples)
  • find the factors of a number
  • find the GCF (greatest common factors)
  • reduce fractions to their lowest terms
  • find the prime factors
  • differentiate prime numbers from composite numbers
  • solve word problems
  • define and utilize math vocabulary
I encourage all parents to become an active part of your child's scholastic life and check with students to find out what they have been working on. By making sure that they have notebooks, supplies and are making a strong effort to complete assignments punctually, you assist us all on the road to success. :)
